WILLEMSTAD - Last Thursday, Minister of Justice Shalten Hato kicked off the first meeting on the theme of 'Illegal Firearm Possession and Smuggling' within the Undermining Action Center Curaçao (ACOC). With this important step, the ACOC aims to collaborate with various partners to collectively address this serious problem. The ACOC, in conjunction with partners in the law enforcement chain, has decided to prioritize illegal firearm possession and smuggling. This initiative is based on growing concerns regarding firearm-related crimes in recent times and their impact on our society.
The kick-off of this theme marks the beginning of an intensive collaboration among various stakeholders. These include the Public Prosecution Service Curaçao, the Curaçao Police Force, Customs, the Coast Guard, the Royal Marechaussee, the RST, Interpol, the Ministry of Justice, and Customs. By acting together, information can be exchanged, expertise can be shared, and effective strategies can be developed to combat illegal firearm possession and smuggling. During the kick-off, efforts are made to identify risks and develop preventive and punitive measures. Additionally, consideration is given to the governance tools that can be employed to address this form of criminality.
Through these collective efforts, the aim is to make a significant difference in the fight against illegal firearm possession and smuggling.
