KEM Urges Minister to Revive Curaçao’s Soccer Season

Local | By Correspondent January 8, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – The Kòrsou Esun Miho (KEM) parliamentary faction has called on Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports, Sithree ‘Cey’ van Heydoorn (MFK), to take immediate action to restart the halted soccer season in Curaçao. According to KEM, approximately 500,000 guilders are needed to resume the championship, but the lack of financial resources has left players, teams, fans, and local businesses in limbo.

Parliamentarian Anthony Godett (KEM) addressed the issue in a formal letter to the minister, emphasizing the government’s primary responsibility to ensure the continuity of all sports on the island. Godett urged van Heydoorn to allocate the necessary funds either through his ministry or by coordinating with fellow ministers. He warned that inaction could cause lasting damage to sports development, particularly for the island’s youth.

The normalization committee, led by Reginald Carolina, previously stated that the required funds are unavailable. KEM countered that financial constraints should not be an excuse, suggesting the possibility of tapping into international sports funds as a last resort. Godett also pointed to the importance of the "Sport and Physical Activity Policy 2021-2025," which had been discussed in parliament.

“KEM raises critical questions: Why has the minister failed to act despite earlier warnings about the situation? How is it possible for a championship, which impacts thousands on the island, to be stalled for months without a clear resolution?” Godett wrote.

He concluded by emphasizing the urgency for the government to provide answers and take swift action to prevent further harm to the sport. The future of soccer in Curaçao now hinges on decisive measures from the minister and his administration.
