KEM to present new candidate for SOAW minister next week

Local | By Correspondent December 10, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The political party Kòrsou Esun Mihó (KEM) announced that it will introduce a new candidate for the position of Minister of Social Development, Labor, and Welfare (SOAW) next Monday. Member of Parliament Anthony Godett confirmed that the candidate’s name will be formally submitted on that day.

Last Sunday, KEM’s leadership, party council, and parliamentary faction convened to discuss recent developments and outline plans for their participation in the Pisas II cabinet and the upcoming March 2025 elections. Following Jason Fullinck’s withdrawal from the nomination for personal reasons, the party decided to propose another candidate. Fullinck will continue serving as Chief of Cabinet at the SOAW ministry.

Candidate Nomination Process

While the name of the new nominee remains undisclosed, Godett emphasized the party’s dedication over recent months. Despite elections being just over three months away, KEM has initiated the nomination process for the ministerial position. Godett expressed confidence that the screening process would not be protracted, citing past instances where screenings were completed within weeks. He noted that the duration of the process is not influenced by the nominee’s identity.

Preparations for the 2025 Elections

During the same meeting, KEM began assembling its candidate list for the March 21, 2025 elections. Party founder and political leader Michelangelo ‘Lo’ Martines is expected to lead the list, as he did in 2021, barring unforeseen circumstances.

KEM plans to provide further updates next week regarding its role in the Pisas II cabinet and election preparations. Currently, Martines is in custody on charges of drug trafficking and money laundering. In a recent parliamentary session, Godett called for an end to what he described as judicial interference in parliament, particularly concerning Martines’ case.

This nomination marks a critical step for KEM as it seeks to solidify its position both in the current administration and in the forthcoming elections.
