KEM asks minister not to increase water prices

Local | By Correspondent October 11, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - The political party KEM is requesting Minister Ruisandro Cijntje of Economic Development not to implement the 41-cent increase in water prices. This was stated in a press release by the party.

The Bureau of Telecommunications & Post announced at the end of September that the water prices would be adjusted to 41 cents per cubic meter starting from October 1.

KEM has serious concerns about the potential negative impact of this increase on families and businesses. Earlier this year, the water prices were already raised by 1.21 cents per cubic meter, resulting in significant additional revenue for Aqualectra.

KEM emphasizes that Aqualectra is a non-profit organization, where profits are meant for reinvestment and not for financial gain. Furthermore, the party points out that the financial situation raises questions since the annual report for 2022 from Aqualectra has not been made public yet.

The party urges Cijntje to carefully reconsider the proposed rate increase.
