WILLEMSTAD - Drivers who are stopped by the police must wear their belts until the officer comes to the window and the check starts. That's the lesson a motorist learned in court yesterday.
The man was fined 300 guilders for not wearing a belt, according to the officer. But according to the driver, he had just loosened it to be able to get his car papers from the glove compartment. That didn't make much sense, by the way, because his inspection papers had expired.
During the check there was a heated discussion, but a good explanation for the lack of his seat belt was not forthcoming. The police then decided to give him a ticket, possibly to challenge it in court, the officer added.
The judge found the violation legally and convincingly proven because of the official report drawn up on oath of office and sentenced in accordance with the demands of the Public Prosecution Service.
