Justice to cut six million on overtime Curaçao police

Local | By Correspondent March 14, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao must reduce overtime costs for the police from eighteen to twelve million guilders. A proposal from Justice Minister Shalton Hato must release the required six million. The police unions are now considering that proposal.

The point of departure for the unions is that the cutbacks must not be at the expense of the safety of police personnel and, by extension, society.

They are now discussing this internally. The proposal will then be submitted to the Centrally Organized Consultation in Civil Service Affairs. The Council of Ministers has yet to consider it.

Overtime is often required due to staff shortages, but also provides significant additional income for police officers, in addition to their own salary. For that reason, tackling overtime is a sensitive matter.
