Justice Ministry Reports Progress in Fight Against Child Sexual Abuse, Calls for National DNA Database

WILLEMSTAD – A little over a year after launching the campaign “KIKO i e Man”, the Ministry of Justice of Curaçao has provided an update on efforts to combat child sexual abuse. While important steps have been taken, the ministry acknowledged that further work remains, particularly the establishment of a national DNA database, which it considers essential.

Since the campaign began, the ministry has invested in public information and awareness programs aimed at children, parents, and professionals. Training sessions are being provided to professionals who work with children, helping them recognize and respond to signs of abuse. Children themselves are being actively educated about their rights, with clear messages that sexual abuse in their environment is a criminal offense.

The ministry also noted that there are now clearer avenues for prosecution and better access to support for victims of abuse. However, officials stress that a comprehensive DNA registry is still missing and would play a critical role in bringing perpetrators to justice and strengthening the protection of minors across the island.
