Justice Minister Shalten Hato Continues Investment in Community Safety

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao’s Minister of Justice, Shalten Hato, is intensifying efforts to enhance public safety across the island. As part of these ongoing initiatives, Minister Hato and the Curaçao Police Force received a presentation on the morning of Tuesday, May 20, 2025, detailing a new and modern camera surveillance system. These cameras are set to be deployed to monitor and support various areas, including traffic law enforcement and crime prevention.

The new system features digital cameras capable of detecting and recording incidents such as traffic accidents, criminal acts (like theft), illegal gatherings, and other public order disturbances. The advanced technology has been tailored to Curaçao’s specific needs, with a clear focus on public safety and road monitoring.

Minister Hato stressed that for some time now, work has been underway on multiple fronts to develop a comprehensive plan aimed at modernizing and expanding the island’s technological capacity for safety. “We must invest in technology to protect our neighborhoods, our people, and our future,” said the Minister.

In the first phase of the project, a total of 50 cameras will be installed. These will be placed in strategic locations throughout the island, with a focus on high-traffic areas and locations known for illegal activity. The data gathered by these cameras will enable more effective preventive action and allow law enforcement to respond more swiftly in emergencies or when apprehending individuals involved in criminal behavior.

Minister Hato emphasized that this initiative marks a determined step by the Ministry of Justice toward ensuring safety and peace in the community. “Safety is not a luxury—it is a right. We are working hard every day to build a safer and more secure Curaçao for everyone,” he concluded.
