WILLEMSTAD – During a press conference, Justice Minister Shalten Hato and representatives of the Curaçao Police Force (KPC) unveiled the “Kita Tur” project and campaign, aimed at tackling unsafe practices among road users.
The initiative, officially launched yesterday, introduces stricter enforcement measures against drivers whose vehicle documentation is not in order. This includes inspection certificates, insurance policies, and road tax compliance. Authorities will now impose fines and, in some cases, tow vehicles to a designated impound lot, known as the “kurá,” located in Mahuma.
Increased Costs for Non-Compliance
Vehicle owners will bear the costs for towing and storage. Currently, towing fees are set at 150 guilders, with a daily storage fee of 35 guilders. However, Minister Hato announced that these rates will be adjusted in 2025, with storage fees increasing to at least 70 guilders per day. The legislation outlining these changes is already under review by advisory bodies.
“The goal is to enhance road safety and reduce the number of accidents,” Hato explained. “There is widespread concern in the community about accidents caused by uninsured drivers, leaving victims to shoulder all the resulting expenses.”
Infrastructure and Security Upgrades
Significant preparation has gone into the project, including equipping the Mahuma impound lot with surveillance cameras and on-site security personnel.
In addition to enforcement, the project emphasizes public awareness. A collaborative plan with Charles Cooper, Minister of Traffic, Transportation, and Urban Planning (VVRP), aims to educate drivers on the importance of ensuring their vehicles comply with legal standards before hitting the road. Hato stressed that this is not only for the safety of drivers but also for the protection of other road users.
Community Engagement and Multilingual Outreach
As part of the campaign, discussions are underway with insurance companies and their association to foster safer driving habits. Minister Hato also confirmed that the public awareness campaign will be conducted in multiple languages to effectively reach all road users.
Alarming Statistics Highlight the Need for Action
Curaçao experiences an alarming annual average of 11,000 traffic accidents involving injuries and property damage. The government’s comprehensive approach through the “Kita Tur” campaign aims to address these challenges, ensuring safer roads for everyone.
