WILLEMSTAD – Justice Minister Shalten Hato has confirmed that the Ministry of Justice will continue the implementation of the Polis di Bario (Neighborhood Police) initiative within the Police Force of Curaçao. With the swearing-in of the new Pisas III Cabinet yesterday, the minister has immediately resumed the projects that were already underway, including this one. Formerly known as the Regisor di Bario, the initiative has undergone an evaluation and official rebranding, and now carries the new title Polis di Bario.
The Polis di Bario represents a shift from the previous model. These are uniformed officers, actively serving as members of the Curaçao Police Force, who are assigned to specific neighborhoods. They serve as direct points of contact for the community, actively engage in local issues, and address both structural and preventive challenges across various areas. The officers also handle a wide range of social problems, especially those affecting the community as a whole.
Polis di Bario are permanently assigned to their neighborhoods, building trust-based relationships with residents. Their focus includes public safety, youth-related crime, substance abuse such as drugs and “lachgas” (laughing gas), and other relevant local concerns. These officers provide a consistent presence and are easily identifiable members of the police force within their designated areas.

Minister Hato emphasized that strengthening the Polis di Bario is a key element of a broader strategy to enhance public safety and restore trust between citizens and the police. “Polis di Bario is not just a name change. It reflects a new approach—working closer with the community, with a focus on solving problems and preventing them before they escalate,” the minister stated.
Following an internal presentation to officers involved in the rebranding, a public awareness campaign will soon be launched to introduce the Polis di Bario to the wider community. The campaign will serve to present the designated officers, clarify their roles, and offer space for the public to ask questions and voice concerns.
The Ministry of Justice invites all citizens to collaborate with the Polis di Bario and contribute to the safety and well-being of their neighborhoods.
