Juniel Carolina: Government must take action against waste problem

Local | By Correspondent May 24, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Parliament member Juniel Carolina (MFK) is urging the government to take immediate measures against the waste problem in Curaçao.

The measures proposed by the politician include general clean-ups and free waste disposal at the landfill. Additionally, Carolina calls for stricter controls on illegal dumping of waste.

"In collaboration with various ministries and security services, effective supervision can be maintained. Furthermore, a campaign should be launched to inform and raise awareness among people about where and how to dispose of waste properly," said Carolina.

Currently, a draft bill from the MFK faction is under consideration in Parliament to reduce Selikor's waste disposal fees by 50 percent. This applies to every 1,000 kilos deposited at the Malpais Landfill. The proposal has already been forwarded to the Social and Economic Council (SER) and is now with the Advisory Council, after which it will return to Parliament for further deliberation.
