PARIS - The Curaçaoan Jean-Julien Rojer has won the men's doubles at Roland Garros with his partner Marcelo Arévalo from El Salvador. The two defeated Croatian Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek from the United States in three sets in the final in Paris, 6-7 (4) 7-6 (5) 6-3.
The 40-year-old tennis player thanked his family, who came over from Curaçao, for their support. He realized that it is quite unique to win a Grand Slam at his age. “I'm glad I got to experience this. I also know that I'm getting older and I don't know how much longer I can play these great tournaments. It is special."
Arevalo agreed. “It was a great match with little power difference. Maybe the luckiest won. Nice that we were. We are very happy with it.”
After an almost even match, the Curaçaoan and his teammate forced the decision with a break in the third company, their only one. They didn't give up the lead after that. After about three hours, they decided the game by using their first match point. They had cleared three match points in the second set.
In men's doubles, Rojer also won titles at Wimbledon and the US Open, albeit with a different partner. In Paris he was already the strongest in the mixed doubles.
