Javier Silvania Emerges as Top Vote Getter in Historic MFK Election Victory

Local | By Correspondent March 24, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – Javier Silvania has emerged as the biggest vote-getter in last Friday’s parliamentary elections, securing an impressive 18,264 votes. The MFK’s number two candidate outperformed party leader and former Prime Minister Gilmar ‘Pik’ Pisas, who received 6,681 votes.

The Movementu Futuro Kòrsou (MFK) won the elections by a landslide, securing 41,654 votes, which accounts for more than 55% of the over 75,000 eligible voters who cast their ballots.

The party’s third most popular candidate, outgoing Minister Charles Cooper, received 3,194 votes. A pre-election poll conducted by the Curaçao Knowledge Center and UDC had already identified Silvania, Pisas, and Cooper as the island’s most favored politicians.

MFK’s Absolute Majority

MFK’s 13-seat win grants it an absolute majority in Curaçao’s 21-member parliament, meaning the next cabinet is expected to be formed solely by MFK ministers. This also increases the likelihood that lower-ranking candidates on the party’s list may secure parliamentary seats.

Breakdown of Other Party Results

Beyond MFK’s dominant victory, three other parties managed to secure representation in the Staten (Parliament):

PNP secured 12,228 votes, earning four seats. The party’s elected members include:

Ruthmilda Larmonie (4,422 votes)

Ornelio Martina

Ruisandro Cijntje (4,226 votes)

Sheldry Osepa

Notably, Gwendell Mercelina and Elvin Gerard will be departing from the parliament.

PAR obtained 7,600 votes, translating into two seats. The party will be represented by:

Quincy Girigorie

Shaheen Elhage

Ana Maria Pauletta and Steven Croes will be stepping down.

MAN-PIN also secured enough votes for representation. The party’s delegation will be led by:

Giselle Mc William, the party’s leader

Former Prime Minister Suzy Römer

Potential Changes in Parliament Composition

Although the names of the elected members are now known, further changes remain possible. According to parliamentary rules, elected candidates have the freedom to accept or decline their seats, which could lead to shifts in the final composition of the Staten.

With MFK’s historic win, the party now has a clear mandate to lead Curaçao without the need for coalition partners. The coming weeks will determine how the new government takes shape and how the party plans to govern with its newfound political dominance.
