WILLEMSTAD - Former Curaçao Prime Minister Ivar Asjes could be making a political comeback, according to ongoing speculation. This possibility gains traction following today's announcement by Minister Shalten Hato that Asjes will immediately step down from his role as interim Secretary-General (SG) at the Ministry of Administration, Planning, and Public Services (BPD).
Minister Hato stated that Asjes’ departure stems from two key factors. First, within the "Improving Government Performance" initiative—focused on digitalization and enhanced public services—several decisions were made without ministerial approval. These decisions included the reassignment of civil servants, which Hato deemed misaligned with expectations.
Second, Asjes reportedly expressed a desire to focus on personal goals in 2025 that require his full attention. While the minister did not elaborate further, this has fueled speculation about Asjes’ potential return to politics.
“The decision was made in mutual agreement,” Hato clarified, thanking Asjes for his contributions as interim SG. Asjes will resume his role as Director of Public Services. In the meantime, Nadya Nersicio has been appointed acting SG, with a permanent replacement to be announced soon.
Asjes served as Curaçao’s Prime Minister from 2013 to 2015, and his possible return to the political arena could significantly reshape the local political landscape.
