Islands of the World Congress coming to Curaçao in 2027

WILLEMSTAD - The prestigious congress of the International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA) will take place in 2027 on Curaçao, thanks to the successful bid by local researchers Renske Pin, Steffen van Heijningen, and Guido Rojer.

What is ISISA?

ISISA is a global network that promotes research and knowledge exchange on small islands. It provides a platform for scientists, policymakers, and other stakeholders to discuss the unique challenges and opportunities of islands. ISISA is a voluntary, non-profit, and independent organization. Its objectives are to study islands on their own terms and encourage free scientific discussions on matters such as insularity, dependency, resource management, and the environment.

ISISA was officially established in 1992 during the "Islands of the World III" conference in Nassau, Bahamas. The ISISA congress brings together experts to find sustainable solutions for issues such as climate change, economic development, and cultural preservation. The event fosters collaboration and innovation and helps policymakers make informed decisions.

Previous editions have been organized in locations such as Prince Edward Island (Canada), Lesbos (Greece), and Hainan (China). Each congress has a specific theme that aligns with the current challenges of the host location. The upcoming edition will take place on Lombok, Indonesia, from June 25 to 29, 2024, with the theme "Islands and Resilience: Global Opportunities."

Curaçao in 2027

The 2027 congress offers Curaçao a unique opportunity to showcase its rich culture, beautiful nature, and innovative projects to an international audience. It will strengthen Curaçao's international ambitions as a proposed center of knowledge and innovation.

The initiative is widely supported by the University of Curaçao (UoC), the University of Aruba (UA), the University of St. Martin (USM), NAAM, and CARMABI, all partners. Additionally, it is financially supported by the Caribbean Research Program Committee of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).

The congress is expected to attract around 200 visitors, including many island researchers from all corners of the world. It offers a unique and valuable opportunity for networking, collaboration, and the exchange of innovative ideas.
