Investigation launched into death of Colombian woman under police supervision in Curaçao

Local | By Correspondent October 16, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Landsrecherche has initiated an investigation into the police conduct surrounding the deportation of 46-year-old Colombian woman Leana Carbonell Alvarado, who died on October 2 while under the supervision of the Immigration Service, a division of the Curaçao Police Corps (KPC). Her death was initially classified as natural, but numerous questions have been raised about the circumstances that may have contributed to her passing.

Justice Minister Shalten Hato, after conducting an internal investigation and holding discussions with the chief of the KPC, reached out to the Attorney General of the Public Prosecution Service to express concerns that emerged during the review.

The Attorney General confirmed that an external investigation has been launched by the Landsrecherche, independent of the ongoing internal police inquiry. This investigation will focus on the circumstances surrounding the Colombian woman's death, examining whether any errors or irregularities occurred during the handling of her case.

Parliamentary Questions Raised

Gwendell Mercelina, a member of the Partido Nashonal di Pueblo (PNP), has expressed grave concerns over the woman's death in an official letter to Justice Minister Shalten Hato. Mercelina requested that the letter be addressed during the Parliament’s Question Hour. However, Charetti America Franciska, the President of Parliament, declined the request, citing the ongoing investigation into the matter.

The case has raised widespread concern within the community, with calls for transparency and accountability in the investigation process.
