Introduction of Caribbean Guilder delayed again, possibly pushed to 2025

WILLEMSTAD - The anticipated arrival of the Caribbean guilder has faced yet another setback. Initially slated for a mid-2024 debut, sources now suggest that the introduction of the new currency might be delayed by an additional year.

Reports indicate that commercial banks were recently informed that the Caribbean guilder is unlikely to make its appearance until at least 2025. The Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten (CBCS) has chosen to remain silent on the precise release date, leaving many eager for more information.

Back in June, the CBCS presented its proposed agreements on implementing the Caribbean guilder to the Social Economic Council (SER). During the presentation, it was stressed that establishing a fixed exchange rate with the dollar is of utmost importance. The CBCS will also carefully determine the exchange rate relative to other international currencies, keeping a watchful eye on the value of the Caribbean guilder.

At the time, the SER acknowledged the significance of attending this presentation, as it could potentially serve as a crucial stepping stone towards the eventual introduction of the Caribbean guilder.
