International Monetary Fund audits Curaçao's tax office

Local | By Correspondent October 11, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - A team of four auditors from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has begun an audit of Curaçao’s tax office this week, following a request by the Minister of Finance, Javier Silvania. According to the minister, significant efforts have been made over the past three years to improve the services of the tax authority and boost tax compliance. The IMF’s audit aims to assess the progress made since 2021 and identify areas that still need improvement.

The audit will evaluate several key areas, including the registration of taxpayers, risk management related to tax compliance and operations, support for voluntary compliance, timely filing of tax returns, timely payment of taxes owed, efficient revenue management, and transparency and accountability. While acknowledging that the ultimate goal has not yet been reached, the tax office views this audit as a "progress report," according to Minister Silvania.

The findings will help guide future efforts to further enhance the performance and efficiency of Curaçao's tax system.
