Integrating Papiamentu into Google Translate: A step forward in digitalization

WILLEMSTAD - The digitalization of Papiamentu is on its way to integration into Google Translate, according to Minister of Education, Sithree van Heydoorn.

This project, which has already begun with a thorough inventory of existing word lists, will also include proverbs and grammar rules to create a foundation for digital Papiamentu. This initiative is planned to be completed within five years.

During a committee meeting, the minister explained that the integration of Papiamentu into digital platforms is essential for language development and the preservation of cultural heritage.

At present, an inventory is being made of all existing lists of Papiamentu, including those of Leo Floridas, as well as materials from Antoine Maduro, Frank Martinus Arion, and others that encompass the history of Papiamentu.

School Curriculum

The school curriculum was also discussed in the committee meeting. According to Van Heydoorn, there is sufficient material in Papiamentu, with the exception of the SBO schools. The entire curriculum will need to be renewed and innovated as it is outdated. Newer words and modern pedagogy need to be included for a more adequate and current communication system in the modern era. Additionally, Papiamentu will be standardized in all books, related to the final terms for all languages and the levels prescribed by the government.
