WILLEMSTAD - A request for a question hour regarding the death of Colombian woman Leana Carbonell Alvarado at Hato Airport has been denied. Member of Parliament for the opposition party PNP Gwendell Mercelina had submitted the request.
According to a statement from Minister of Justice Shalten Hato, the National Investigation Department has already launched an independent investigation, separate from the internal inquiry conducted by the Curaçao Police Force.
Leana Carbonell Alvarado passed away on October 2 while under the supervision of Curaçao authorities. Witness testimonies indicate that her health deteriorated, and her requests for medical assistance were not addressed in a timely manner.
This raises concerns about whether Alvarado's right to health care was violated. Following the results of the internal investigation, the minister has approached the Attorney General to discuss the possibility of further investigation by the National Investigation Department.
Additionally, Minister Hato seeks clarity on whether proper procedures were followed in this case.
