WILLEMSTAD - The son of a patient who passed away in March 2020 at the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) has lost confidence in the results of an investigation conducted by the CMC-affiliated lab, ADC.
He demands that an independent laboratory analyze the substances in the injection that may have caused his mother’s death. The court has granted this request.
Cardiac Arrest
The death of Mrs. Engelhardt, who allegedly died of cardiac arrest shortly after receiving an injection, is at the center of a legal dispute. CMC reports indicate that she died of cardiac arrest, but her son insists that the injection triggered a fatal reaction.
An investigation by the Inspectorate revealed that Mrs. Engelhardt may have been injected with potassium chloride, a substance that can be immediately lethal when administered into the bloodstream, even in small amounts.
During a recent court session, CMC representatives requested access to the materials that were possibly used during the injection. Meanwhile, the deceased's son expressed doubts about the objectivity of the ADC investigation, urging for an external inquiry by an independent, ISO-certified laboratory.
The court has now ruled that an independent third-party laboratory will conduct the investigation to clarify the exact contents of the injection and IV fluids used.
A meeting between the judge and both parties will take place within two weeks to finalize arrangements for the external investigation.
