Increasing poverty among Curaçaoan households

Local | By Correspondent September 20, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Poverty is on the rise among a significant number of households in Curaçao. Many families struggle to make ends meet, resulting in fewer opportunities for their children's future. This is highlighted in the budget explanation from the Ministry of Economic Development.

Unemployment is a significant issue in Curaçao. This problem, coupled with the recent high inflation, has led to more people leaving Curaçao for countries with better prospects. The population on the island decreased by 10,000 people between 2018 and 2021.

Children's educational attainment is declining because parents lack the financial means to provide them with a solid foundation for social and educational development. This is directly linked to the unemployment of these children later in life.

Curaçao is in discussions with the European Union, which intends to provide funds to support Curaçao. Additionally, there are numerous initiatives, both from the island itself and from Europe, aimed at providing assistance to families facing difficulties.
