Incident-Free Fuikdag; Some Boats Turned Back

Local | By Correspondent January 6, 2025

WILLEMSTAD This year’s Fuikdag passed without incidents, though several boats were turned back, including near Santa Barbara, due to non-compliance with regulations. The Coast Guard reported these actions as part of their routine checks.

With approximately 250 boats and water scooters (Seadoos), this year’s Fuikdag saw a slightly larger turnout than previous years. DJs and artists from Curaçao and the Netherlands performed on various boats, making it a must-attend event for many young vacationers. Some attendees reportedly paid as much as ANG 600 for a spot on a boat. The weather alternated between sunny spells and occasional clouds.

No notable incidents occurred in Fuik Bay itself. However, near the Caracasbaai fishing harbor, police towed several improperly parked cars as the large crowds made finding suitable parking a challenge.

The Coast Guard highlighted a recurring issue: despite prior communication and long-standing regulations, some boat owners failed to have their documents in order. Boats were turned back after inspections at locations such as the Santa Barbara pier. Additionally, a few boats attempting to operate as water taxis were also sent back. No fines were issued during these checks.
