WILLEMSTAD - Due to the growing demand for healthcare services, the Ministry of Health is advocating for the development of a more effective treatment plan for diabetes care. To achieve this goal, the Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN) has announced the formation of a task group named the Diabetes Care Task Group.
According to the ministry, diabetes type 2 is a prevalent chronic condition in Curaçao. Many individuals with diabetes eventually face challenges such as depression, cardiovascular diseases, kidney issues, vision problems, or amputations. The disease is deemed manageable and partly preventable, as it is also influenced by people's lifestyles.
The ministry envisions the development of a diabetes care protocol that can be closely monitored. The objective is to ensure a seamless flow within the healthcare chain through close collaboration and coordination among various healthcare partners. The improvement of diabetes care, as per the GMN ministry, is expected to contribute to cost reduction in healthcare.
The ministry aims to attract more certified practice support staff with additional time, providing better explanations to patients and focusing on lifestyle aspects. These professionals can be trained and deployed to support general practitioners, with the latter playing a central role in the healthcare chain.
Within three months, the Diabetes Care Task Group will formulate a detailed implementation plan outlining steps and deadlines for enhancing diabetes care. The task group is appointed for a minimum of one year, with the possibility of extension to one and a half years.
