WILLEMSTAD - Human Rights Defense Curaçao (HRDC) is concerned about last week's verdict, in which the General Court gave the authorities of Curaçao the benefit of the doubt about the current approach to the reception of aliens.
Curaçao was previously reprimanded by the court because the reception of foreigners was unlawful and in violation of human rights. Now the prison is being given a second chance because it says it has adapted the regimes in favor of the foreigners.
The human rights organization says it prefers not to comment on judicial sentences, but is concerned about the latter sentence and says it is bewildered.
HRDC's concern lies in the fact that undocumented detained migrants seeking justice are now at risk of becoming victims of human rights abuses.
The Amnesty International report from last year, entitled 'Still disenfranchised', is unfortunately still valid, according to the human rights organization in Curaçao.
HRDC sees in daily practice that there are still no substantial changes in the treatment of undocumented migrants who have been imprisoned. The detention on the prison grounds, behind barbed wire under a prison regime is still ongoing.
