WILLEMSTAD – The Human Rights Caribbean Foundation proudly announces that it has been selected as one of the final 50 contenders for the prestigious Appeltje van Oranje 2025 award. This annual prize, presented by the Oranje Fonds, honors social initiatives in the Netherlands and the Caribbean that contribute to an inclusive society where no one is left behind. This year’s theme is: Essential Links in Society.
Out of 348 submissions, Human Rights Caribbean was chosen for its tireless advocacy for equal rights and same-sex marriage in Curaçao. The coming weeks are crucial, as a ten-day public voting period and a pitch day will determine which ten initiatives will ultimately be nominated for the highly sought-after award.
The prize includes a bronze statuette designed by Princess Beatrix, as well as a €25,000 cash grant. The award ceremony will be held at Paleis Noordeinde and presented by Queen Máxima.
A Symbolic Fight for Global and Regional Equality
The fight for LGBTQ+ rights is far from over. In over 70 countries, homosexuality is still criminalized—with ten of those countries imposing the death penalty. Even close to home, in Guyana, same-sex acts remain illegal.
On May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia, Human Rights Caribbean reflects on this ongoing struggle. Yet, there is also cause for celebration: Curaçao stands as a regional example in the advancement of equal rights.
The foundation hopes that this recognition will not only further its mission but also inspire others to become essential links in building a more just and inclusive society.
