WILLEMSTAD – Young adults in Curaçao show the strongest support for integration of undocumented migrants, according to a new Human Rights Defense (HRDC) study.
The focus group consisting of young adults showed a combination of empathy and realism. Participants recognized undocumented migrants as vulnerable people but also as valuable contributors to society and the economy.
The questionnaire results showed that young adults gave the highest score of all groups regarding the importance of integration: 9.2 out of 10.
All participants in this group agreed that undocumented migrants experience discrimination and that they help fill labor shortages.
Despite recognizing that migration has changed Curaçao, only 20 percent of young adults viewed undocumented migrants as a threat.
HRDC concluded that this group mainly sees migration as a necessary and positive development, while still supporting clear rules and effective government management.
