WILLEMSTAD – Home care institutions in Curaçao will receive a total of 65 additional nursing beds to significantly reduce the shortage of medical equipment. The Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature announced this decision following consultations with the Social Insurance Bank (SVB). The expansion is expected to substantially reduce the waiting list for nursing beds in one go.
According to the ministry, the acquisition of the extra beds is a direct result of discussions with home care organizations such as Stichting Wit Gele Kruis and Stichting Thuiszorg Bandabou. These organizations have emphasized the urgent need for more nursing beds to accommodate individuals receiving care at home.
New Housing Units
In addition to the extra nursing beds, an additional two million guilders has been allocated for the construction of forty housing units for Totolika, an organization that provides support and care for people with intellectual disabilities. This funding comes on top of the already available 5.6 million guilders, bringing the total budget for Totolika to 7.6 million guilders.
The complex, to be built in Zapateer, will consist of five interconnected blocks with living spaces where individuals with intellectual disabilities can live independently, cook, and engage in activities under the supervision of the SGR group. Additionally, a recreation area will be constructed for daytime activities.
The construction tender process has been completed, and the expected construction time is approximately one year.
