Local | By Correspondent March 7, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - On Saturday, March 9, the air defense and command frigate HNLMS Tromp begins its journey around the world. This six-month mission, named Pacific Archer, not only showcases the operational capabilities of the Royal Netherlands Navy but also emphasizes the importance of freedom of navigation for Dutch values, well-being, and prosperity, according to the Defense press release.

Onboard the ship, in addition to the over 200-person crew, is an NH90 helicopter, ready for various exercises and operations in collaboration with allies and partners. The route will take the Tromp from the Mediterranean to the Indo-Pacific, returning in September via the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean.

According to Defense, this mission provides essential experience in operations, maintenance, and logistics and demonstrates the ability of the Royal Netherlands Navy to operate independently worldwide for an extended period.

The Dutch government recognizes the strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific region for Dutch security and the economy, viewing Pacific Archer as an excellent opportunity to strengthen military and diplomatic relationships in this area. This aligns with the government's intention to send a navy ship to this region annually.

HNLMS Tromp, one of the four air defense and command frigates of the Royal Netherlands Navy, is equipped with advanced radar and weapon systems. These capabilities allow the ship to detect, track, and neutralize air threats, playing a crucial role in the navy's air defense tasks.
