Historic funding boost: Over 2 million for local theater groups

WILLEMSTAD - The Dutch Performing Arts Fund has awarded a multi-year production subsidy to Curaçaoan theater groups for the first time. Teatro Bulabanda and Teatro KadaKen will receive over 2 million guilders for the period 2025-2028 to create new performances. This groundbreaking announcement was made today. 

Teatro Bulabanda, under the artistic direction of Albert Schoobaar, is renowned for its critical and poetic theater that addresses social developments. In the upcoming period, the group plans to delve into the soul, conscience, and memory of Curaçao, offering audiences profound and thought-provoking productions. 

The other recipient of the subsidy, Teatro KadaKen, is led by Lou Nisbet. Both theater groups have been recognized for their unique contributions to the cultural landscape of Curaçao, and this substantial funding will enable them to continue and expand their creative work. 

In total, the Dutch Performing Arts Fund has approved 127 applications, amounting to an annual total of 40.2 million euros. The inclusion of Curaçaoan theater groups in this funding marks a significant milestone in the support and recognition of Caribbean arts and culture.
