WILLEMSTAD – The trial of Urvin ‘Nuto’ Wawoe, set to begin on June 23, will not take place in the courthouse but at the Suffisant Marine Barracks. The Court of First Instance confirmed that the location was chosen due to both security and capacity concerns.
The trial, known as case Themis, is expected to run through July 4 and could occupy full days throughout the two-week period. According to the court, the scale of the case makes it impossible to reserve a courtroom for that duration without disrupting the island's regular judicial operations. Additionally, heightened security measures are necessary due to the nature of the suspect and the allegations.
Wawoe, widely known as ‘Nuto’, was arrested in the Dominican Republic in 2021 and extradited to Curaçao. Prosecutors allege that he is the leader of the No Limit Soldiers gang, which authorities link to serious organized criminal activities. Charges in the Themis case include murder, attempted murder, drug trafficking, and money laundering.
Members of the public who wish to attend the trial must register in advance by providing their full name and a copy of a valid ID. Registration is open until Monday, June 17 at 5:00 p.m., and attendance will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis due to limited seating.
Access to the Marine Barracks will only be granted via a designated meeting point at the sports hall of Suffisant Stadium. Attendees must report there by 7:30 a.m. for security screening before being transported by bus to the courtroom. Once inside the compound, visitors are not allowed to leave until the day’s session concludes. Mobile phones, recording devices, and drones are strictly prohibited.
