Heavy sentences demanded for murder of young former policeman

Local | By Correspondent February 19, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - On Friday, the Public Prosecutor's Office demanded heavy sentences against the trio suspected of the murder of former police officer Niven van Thijs (22). The 20-year-old Nigarryen Eduarda faced a demand of twenty years, as did the 19-year-old Djaver-Rion Lomp, while Adriane Sophia (20) faced a demand of eighteen years. Thijs was fatally shot on March 19 last year.

The tragedy unfolded when someone with gunshot wounds was left outside the CMC (Curaçao Medical Center) by two youths after the murder. Based on the description of the victim's vehicle, the police concluded that this person, later identified as Adriana Sophia, might have been involved in a shooting that had taken place shortly before in Palu Blanku. After questioning Sophia, more arrests followed. Lomp and Eduarda turned themselves in two days after the murder at the police station, along with the weapon.

The attack on former policeman Van Thijs followed a confrontation earlier that evening. After a chase, the perpetrators forced Van Thijs to stop his vehicle, after which he got out and was shot on the spot.

Verdict in three weeks.
