Heat protocol activated in schools at the beginning of the new school year

Local | By Correspondent August 10, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Most schools in Curaçao are resuming classes after a nearly five-week vacation period. Due to the extreme heat, a heat protocol is in effect. The measures have been formulated and announced by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport (OWCS).

The Meteorological Service has issued a yellow alert due to the unusually high temperatures on the island over the past few days. With heat indices reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius, the weather service emphasizes the importance of taking appropriate precautions, especially for students and teachers in schools.

One of the measures is allowing children to go home on Thursday as early as 11:30 AM. If the temperature continues to rise, there is a possibility that the Meteo will issue an orange alert. In such a case, the OWCS ministry will request school administrations to inform parents to pick up their children at 10:30 AM.

Additionally, some schools are providing extra drinking water to ensure that students remain hydrated.
