Health ministry issues warning as Portuguese Man o’ War appear on Curaçao beaches

Local | By Correspondent October 28, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN) has issued a public warning about Portuguese Man o' War sightings along Mambo Beach, Jan Thiel, and Banda Bou. According to the Ministry, these jellyfish-like creatures may be drifting toward shore due to recent changes in wind direction and ocean currents.

In recent days, 13 individuals have been injured after coming into contact with the tentacles of the Portuguese Man o' War, which can cause intense pain. The Curaçao General Practitioners’ Association (HAP) has confirmed these reports, advising beachgoers to exercise caution.

Visitors are urged to maintain a safe distance, as the Man o' War tentacles can extend up to 15 meters (50 feet) in length. The Ministry notes that these creatures are easily recognizable, appearing as "purple, air-filled sacs" floating on the water's surface.

If contact occurs, the Ministry recommends rinsing the skin with seawater and then pouring lukewarm water over the affected area. A diluted vinegar solution may help reduce the pain. For severe or persistent pain, ice can be applied, and it is advised to seek medical attention from a physician if necessary.
