Health Ministry Issues Sahara Dust Warning for May and June in Curaçao

WILLEMSTAD The Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature issued a general warning this morning to all residents of Curaçao regarding the increased intensity of Sahara dust expected during May and June. According to forecasts, the Sahara dust will pass over the island this week, potentially causing visual disturbances and discomfort.

The ministry cautions that the dust particles can worsen allergies and cause respiratory symptoms. People with respiratory problems or allergies are advised to take the following precautions during days when Sahara dust is present:

Stay indoors as much as possible with windows and doors closed.

Avoid using fans, as they can circulate dust particles.

Regularly check and clean air conditioner filters at home and in vehicles.

Clean furniture with a damp cloth to remove dust, avoiding shaking the cloth to prevent spreading dust.

Use allergy medications prescribed by your doctor if you suffer from allergies.

Keep car windows closed and use air conditioning whenever possible.

For more information about health concerns related to Sahara dust, residents are encouraged to contact their general practitioner.

The Ministry stresses that these measures can help reduce discomfort and protect vulnerable groups during periods of heavy dust presence on the island.
