WILLEMSTAD - The beloved Curaçaoan music ensemble Grupo Serenada celebrated its 50th anniversary last weekend with two sold-out jubilee performances at the PWFC auditorium, reaffirming its status as one of the island’s most cherished cultural icons.

Even before the doors opened, long lines of visitors had formed outside, eager to attend the milestone celebration. Inside, the atmosphere was filled with anticipation and pride.
Under the direction of Harry Moen, the group presented a musical tribute to Curaçao’s identity, weaving together familiar melodies, traditional rhythms, and deeply emotional moments that visibly moved the audience.
Special guest performances by Romeo and Rose Heije, Randell Corsen, and Dibo D added extra brilliance to the evening. The collaboration between generations of musicians highlighted how Grupo Serenada has become not only a band but also a school of inspiration for young artists determined to carry forward Curaçao’s rich musical heritage.
Honored during Siman di Kultura
This year, the government dedicated Siman di Kultura (Culture Week) to Grupo Serenada in recognition of its decades-long contribution to preserving and promoting local music and culture.
According to many attendees, the honor is well deserved. Over the past half-century, Grupo Serenada has kept Curaçao’s traditional sounds alive while continually evolving, remaining true to its roots and uniting generations through the island’s music.
The anniversary concerts were not just a commemoration of the past — they were a celebration of continuity, showing that the spirit of Curaçaoan music, as embodied by Grupo Serenada, remains vibrant and enduring.
