WILLEMSTAD – In her annual New Year’s address, the Governor of Curaçao highlighted the importance of reflecting on the past and embracing the future while celebrating milestones like the 70th anniversary of the Kingdom Charter. Delivered at the Governor’s Mansion, the speech expressed gratitude to various individuals and organizations that contributed to the celebrations held late last year.

The Governor underscored that the Kingdom Charter, or "Statuut," remains a living document that requires care and attention. She described it as a "common home" for the countries of the Kingdom, offering security and a framework for collaboration. "Like any family home, there are sometimes challenges," she remarked, but expressed confidence in Curaçao's ability to grow in autonomy and cooperation within the Kingdom.

Reflections on 70 Years of the Kingdom Charter

The Governor expressed her personal pride in hosting the commemorations of the Charter’s 70th anniversary, describing it as one of the highlights of her term. She recognized the collaborative efforts of several entities:

Educational Initiatives: Over 600 schoolchildren and university students visited the Governor’s Mansion, engaging in discussions about the Charter’s significance and Curaçao’s autonomy.

Civic Institutions: Organizations like the Advisory Council, the General Audit Chamber, and the Ombudsman helped raise public awareness about the constitutional framework.

Public Exhibits and Demonstrations: Contributions from the Electoral Council, the Ministry of Defense, and cultural institutions, such as Museo Mongui Maruro, added depth to the celebrations.

The Governor praised the efforts to increase public knowledge about the Charter, noting that its longevity depends on continued understanding and care by future generations.

Looking Ahead: A Year of Democratic Milestones

As Curaçao enters an election year, the Governor emphasized the importance of democracy and the role of the independent Electoral Council in organizing the upcoming elections. She expressed hope for a fair and constructive political debate, encouraging parties to focus on shaping the country’s future for the benefit of its citizens.

“We are a learning country,” the Governor noted, expressing optimism about Curaçao's ability to overcome challenges through the checks and balances inherent in its constitutional system.

A Message of Unity and Hope

The Governor concluded her speech with a wish for a prosperous and blessed 2025, urging continued collaboration and dedication to the well-being of Curaçao and its people. "Together, we can take the next step in shaping the future of our nation."
