WILLEMSTAD – Governor Lucille George-Wout initiated the first round of discussions on Saturday afternoon regarding the formation of a new government in Curaçao. She met with key figures, including acting Vice Chair of the Council of Advice Jeff Sybesma, Chair of the Curaçao Parliament (Staten) Charetti America-Francisca, Ministers of State, as well as representatives from the Council of Churches and the Social and Economic Council.
During these initial consultations, Ministers of State Emily de Jongh-Elhage and Maria Liberia-Peters, Pastor Curtis Meris on behalf of the Council of Churches, and Raul Henriquez representing the Social and Economic Council provided insights into the political situation and potential next steps for forming a new government.
Historic Parliamentary Majority
The discussions follow Friday’s elections, in which the Movimentu Futuro Kòrsou (MFK) of outgoing Prime Minister Gilmar ‘Pik’ Pisas secured 13 of the 21 parliamentary seats. With this absolute majority, there is no constitutional requirement to form a coalition—a rare occurrence in Curaçao’s parliamentary history.
Governor George-Wout is expected to determine the next steps for government formation in the coming days.
