WILLEMSTAD - The government's plan to allow two months of free waste dumping at Malpais and Koraal Specht has not yet been realized.
The Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN) previously proposed to open the landfills for free waste disposal starting July 1. However, the ministry later postponed this to August 1.
Trucker and former police officer Kennedy Vrutaal blames Selikor director Wesley Kook for blocking GMN's initiative. Vrutaal is a member of a working group established to come up with solutions to increasing pollution and criticizes Kook's policies. He advocates for a dumping fee based on cubic meters instead of weight.
Parliament member Juniel Carolina suggested in May that the government must take immediate action against the waste problem in Curaçao and proposed making landfill dumping free. Additionally, the parliament member called for stricter controls and campaigns to raise awareness about where and how to dispose of waste properly.
The plans for free waste disposal were initiated in response to the ongoing fire at the illegal dump site Dam Pretu.
