WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao government has made a decision about the waste tax in consultation with utility company Aqualectra and waste management company Selikor. That is the tax for garbage collection, which is paid via the Aqualectra account.
A normal household pays 35 guilders per month. Minister of Finance Javier Silvania wants to ensure that more people pay their waste tax. At the moment there is a large arrear in payments. According to Silvania, all debts from before 2018 will be forgiven. Outstanding bills after that time can be paid at Aqualectra until the end of the year. From January 1, 2023, it will be a matter for the tax authorities. This means that if the 'garbage tax' is not paid, an assessment may follow.
