WILLEMSTAD - The government of Curaçao is launching a new project to support the fishing sector by deploying Fish Aggregation Devices (FADs) in the sea to enhance fish catches.
FADs are objects that attract fish such as tuna and mahi-mahi. Curaçao started using these devices in the 1990s. In the past five years, fishermen have invested in FADs themselves, which has increased their catches. However, since building FADs is expensive and they are often lost, the fishermen are seeking additional support.
The Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN) has hired an expert from Antigua and acquired materials to construct and install 25 new FADs. The expert will also share his knowledge with local fishermen and experts.
Fishermen who want to help build the FADs can now sign up. They must have experience in fishing and navigation.
