Government retirees form action committee over wage cut law dispute

Local | By Correspondent September 18, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Discontent is growing among government retirees over the 2020 wage cut law, which imposed a 12.5 percent reduction in their employment benefits. In response, former civil servants have formed an action committee during a meeting held at the ABVO building in Brievengat on Tuesday.

The government has announced plans to repeal the law retroactively from January 1, 2024. However, retirees are pushing for an earlier date, demanding the repeal take effect from January 1, 2023. This change would enable them to benefit from pension indexation, which is currently not feasible under the government's proposal.

Udemar 'Shon Ma' Isidora, one of the committee leaders and a former chairman of the police union, stated that talks with the government have so far failed to yield any progress. The committee is planning a series of actions to pressure the government, which could impact both the administration and the broader community. Among the potential measures are protests, although the specifics of the planned actions remain unclear.

The retirees are standing firm on their demands, signaling that they will continue to push for changes that directly affect their financial security.
