WILLEMSTAD – The Ministry of Traffic, Transportation and Urban Planning (VVRP) is introducing the concept of a Shared Street to emphasize the importance of traffic safety on the island. In this model, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorized traffic all share the same space. The announcement was made in an official government press release.
According to the ministry, pedestrians always have the right of way in a Shared Street. The concept is gaining popularity worldwide as it contributes to improved mobility and increased safety in urban areas.
“There are already several locations on Curaçao, such as Breedestraat in Punda and Pietermaai, where the infrastructure aligns with this model,” stated the VVRP.
The ministry is calling on all road users to reduce their speed and remain extra alert in these zones, where there is no clear separation between sidewalks and roadways. The goal is to create a safer and more inclusive environment for all who use public streets.
