WILLEMSTAD - With a new heatwave on the horizon, Minister Heydoorn of Education is requesting the parliament to convene a meeting of the central committee to discuss the upcoming heatwaves at schools.
Given the extraordinary heat that students and school staff have experienced in the past year, a Climate Control Committee was already established. Its purpose was to investigate the possibilities and measures schools can take in the future to prevent classes from being canceled.
One of the main tasks of the committee was to assess the capacity and supply of electricity, insulation in buildings, and other defects in all school buildings.
Schools have been given the freedom to take appropriate measures depending on the type of school and circumstances. Proposals have also been made to alleviate the situation, such as encouraging children to drink more water, reducing strenuous activities, allowing lighter clothing, and increasing the availability of drinking water at schools.
For primary schools, there is the option to introduce an extra break, and in unbearable conditions, children may be sent home if they feel unwell. For secondary schools, if necessary, an adjusted schedule with lessons of 30 instead of 45 minutes can be implemented.
