"Government must take over part of Sehos' debt"

Local | By Correspondent October 14, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The nearly forty million guilders debt that the Sehos bears must be borne for a large part by the government, in accordance with the agreement. That is the opinion of the foundation that manages the old hospital. It is in suspension of payment.

The proposal that is now on the table is to set off 57 percent against the tax debts that have arisen after 2017. According to the foundation, this is the result of the new hospital CMC only opening two years later and the inadequate healthcare budgets.

The demolition of real estate belonging to SEHOS for the benefit of the new hospital, without the old hospital being compensated for this, has also worsened the debt position.

The remaining 43 percent of the debts must be paid from the sale of the buildings of the old Sehos

Not an option

During the talks with the foundation, Minister Silvania clearly indicated that cancellation of the foundation's existing debts is not an option.

But the government could perhaps participate in the foundation. This means that the State could participate as a shareholder in the new business operations.

The foundation is in favor for cooperation, but then after all debts have been paid. In this way, both parties can face the future with a clean slate and possibly start a partnership.

It has now been agreed that the Ministry of Finance will verify and analyze the figures presented before taking a decision on the next steps.
