Government is starting summary proceedings to prevent trade union actions

Local | By Correspondent September 15, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The government of Curaçao has started summary proceedings to prevent the trade unions from continuing with their actions. The six unions ABVO (officials), SAP (Justice), STARF (customs and taxes), NAPB (police), STSK and DOEN (both education) report this.

This step will not prevent them from using their rights to act, the six unions say. The government's step was not well-received. “We live in a democratic country and that is why we continue our struggle to get our rights.

The unions are calling their members to go on strike to get the 12.5% salary cut off the table. The unions also want to separate this proposal from the Top Income Standardization Act which is intended for the high earners in government-owned companies.

Education union Sitek was the big absentee during the actions yesterday. According to chairman Dario Plantijn, the 12.5 percentage cut is already coming to an end and has been agreed with the government to relax it in 2023. Yet he does not exclude that Sitek will join later.
