Government begins preparations for hurricane season

WILLEMSTAD - The government has commenced the cleaning of drainage systems and dams in preparation for the upcoming hurricane season, the Ministry of Traffic, Transport, and Urban Planning (VVRP) announced on Thursday morning during a Relato di Dia (Daily Report).

Albert Martis, the director of the Meteorological Service of Curaçao, emphasized the importance of starting preparations early. The upcoming hurricane season is expected to be more active than usual. "The heavy rainfall experienced in Banda Bou is a reason to remain vigilant when weather systems approach the island," said Martis.

The sea temperature is already high and is expected to rise further from August through October. During La Niña, weaker winds at higher altitudes are expected, which will not hinder the development of storm systems. Due to La Niña, there will likely be an increase in tropical systems.

When a hurricane passes, it draws the wind away from Curaçao, making it hotter. "Prepare your home for the heat and check everything that can obstruct water drainage and remove it," explained Martis.

The government and involved agencies are making preparations, but residents are also urged to take their own precautions.
