Government Announces Comprehensive Plan to Tackle Waste Problems Across Curaçao

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao government has unveiled plans to address the island’s growing waste management problems through a series of new projects aimed at improving how both household and commercial waste are handled.

The announcement was made by John de Lannoy during the government’s official podcast, “Ki Bo Ke Men?” De Lannoy explained that illegal dumping remains a major concern, with around 300 illegal dumping sites currently scattered across the island.

“These sites vary in size, from large to small,” De Lannoy said. “The government is working step by step to clean up and rehabilitate these areas.”

Four Projects in Development

According to De Lannoy, four major projects are being developed to create a more sustainable waste management system for Curaçao. The initiatives will focus on improving waste collection, disposal, and recycling infrastructure, while also aiming to reduce environmental and health hazards caused by illegal dumping.

The government says it plans to combine enforcement, public awareness, and infrastructure improvements to achieve long-term results.

“These efforts mark the beginning of a comprehensive approach to keeping Curaçao cleaner and more environmentally responsible,” De Lannoy emphasized.
