Government and public unions to discuss repeal of salary reduction law

Local | By Correspondent October 4, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Government unions and the Curaçaoan government are scheduled to meet this Friday to discuss the repeal of the salary reduction law.

Minister Shalten Hato will not be attending the meeting of the Central Organized Consultation in Civil Service Affairs (CGOA). He will be replaced by Minister Sithree van Heydoorn.

At the request of the government, the CGOA meeting has been rescheduled from Thursday to Friday at 2:00 p.m. A month ago, the government and unions were at odds over the proposed repeal date of the salary reduction law.

The government has decided to repeal the law retroactively as of January 1, 2024. However, the unions had initially demanded that the law be withdrawn as of January 1, 2023. After negotiations, both parties seem to have agreed on the 2024 repeal.

Before moving forward, the legislative process requires further corrections and additions to the proposed law.
