WILLEMSTAD - In a recent interview with Caribisch Netwerk, Dr. Izzy Gerstenbluth stressed that Curaçao does not require super-specialists in the medical domain but rather values the importance of generalists. The renowned medical professional expressed hope that Curaçaoan students, upon completing their studies abroad, will consider returning to their homeland, highlighting the potential for competitive salaries locally.
Reflecting on the historical context, Gerstenbluth noted, "In the past, we had one general surgeon who also performed vascular surgery and pediatric surgery because there was no other option. Now, you need a pediatric surgeon, but they can only focus on their specialty. So, you still need a specialist for other conditions. We cannot afford that. For small countries, you need generalists. Not super-specialists."
